There are many subtle, unknown twists in the NFL, one of which is the franchise tag. With a franchise tag, a team’s manager is allowed to “tag” a player who is not a true member of his team to be a “free agent” and can become a franchise player if he so chooses. With the franchise tag, the team’s manager makes a deal for a year’s salary with the player, and if the player chooses to accept, he gets that money and plays for that team for that year. Many teams choose not to utilize this advantage. In the past three years, the Green Bay Packers’ franchise tag has only gone out once. In the 2008 season, the Packers franchise tag went to Corey Williams, a defensive tackle, who will receive a salary of $6.36 million for the season. Other than the 2008 season, the Packers’ franchise tag hasn’t gone out in a while.
