In 2006, a federal New Jersey judge approved a $125 million out of court settlement in a Snap On lawsuit brought by its franchise dealers. They alleged that Snap On had used fraudulent and deceptive business practices to inflate sales and profit figures while exploiting franchises. Settling out of court allowed Snap On to control the payment made to the franchise dealers, rather than allowing the lawsuit to go to court, where it could have dragged out for far longer. Despite the fact they may have ended up paying more than if it had gone to court, they got the piece of mind knowing that the lawsuit was settled.
