Q. What are franchise tags and why do players not like to receive them?
Every year team owners can pick one player to become their franchise player. They select this player by giving them a 'franchise tag'. This player then becomes a free agent. This means that they can be bought by any team. There are however a few restrictions on giving out franchise tags. Only one can be given per year, and the player it is given to must not be under contract. Players do not like being franchise tagged because it removes any stability from their jobs. Franchise players are on a one year contract and if something were to go wrong during that year the player would be in a bad situation the next time a contract renegotiation came around.
